Dylan Smith, a 19 year old cheerleading instructor and cheerleader, fell out of a four-story window and although he was injured badly, the fact that he survived is attributed to his cheerleading training.
Smith attended La Salle Academy in Rhode Island where he was part of the school's cheerleading program and helped the team win two high school championships. He then received a cheerleading scholarship to the University of Kentucky where he is a member of their cheerleading white squad. Smith also studies pre-med at the university.
The fall occurred when Smith leaned on a boarded up window and supposedly the nails gave way. He landed in an area of heavy vegetation which might have cushioned his fall a bit, but it has been noted that his father credits his skill and abilities as a cheerleader to helping him survive. “He managed to land on his feet,†said Hugh Smith, Dylan’s father. His father went on to add, “If it wasn’t for his training, he’d be dead.â€
The younger Smith's injuries include a dislocated hip, fractured pelvis, injured spleen and lungs. He remains in a hospital in Rhode Island.
What do you think? Did cheerleading play a part in Smith surviving the fall?
