Zombies and Cheerleaders
Oct 30th 2011, 10:09

Disney Channel has ordered the music-driven pilot "Zombies and Cheerleaders." Production on the pilot begins in December in consideration for a Disney Channel series to premiere in 2012.

The story follows Zed Necrodopolis, a typical high school student with one small caveat; he happens to be a zombie. Despite a high-tech wristwatch designed to curb any appetite he may have for his classmates, he and his zombie friends remain unpopular with the school's most influential group, the pom-pom wielding cheerleaders. Never one to back down from a challenge, Zed sets out to improve zombie student body relations and win the attention of Addison, the cheerleading squad's newest member.

"Zombies and Cheerleaders" is executive produced by Eric Weinberg ("Scrubs," "Death Valley") and was written by Joseph Raso and David Light who also serve as co-executive producers. Todd Strauss Schulson ("A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas") will direct the pilot.

Disney Channel is a 24-hour kid-driven, family inclusive television network that taps into the world of kids and families through original series and movies. Currently available on basic cable in over 99 million U.S. homes and to millions of other viewers on Disney Channels around the world, Disney Channel is part of the Disney/ABC Television Group.

Looking Sensational - Cheer...
Oct 29th 2011, 10:08

As a Cheerleader you are expected to look your best. Whether it be at a competition, game or try out, your appearance is important. When you add in the fact that your active lifestyle demands that your makeup, hair and overall appearances doesn't consume too much of your precious time, you definitely have your work cut out for you. So, how do you maintain that "fresh" look when you're working so hard physically? Here are some tips:
  • Keep in mind that less is usually better. Don't go overboard on any beauty products.
  • Find a hair style that is attractive and highlights your best features. Keep in mind that you'll be jumping, flipping, running and stunting, so you'll want your hair to stay in place. Establish a routine and practice fixing your hair to ensure you're not wasting time on unnecessary steps.
  • Use hair sprays, mousses, and styling gels sparingly. Chances are you'll be sweating and you don't want any of those products running in your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Keep your makeup simple. Learn how to make your best features stand out and how to minimize your flaws. Learn what colors look good on you and which don't. If you ever have the opportunity to have a makeover, take advantage of it.
  • Stay up to date on what's in style. Read magazines, look at hair styles and makeup on TV or at the movies. Be willing to try new things and techniques. If you see someone that has a style you like, ask them how they did it.
  • Stay away from strong and overpowering fragrances. Keep in mind that a lot of beauty products have fragrances added to them. So, between your shampoo, hair spray, perfume and lip gloss you could possibly have on a stinky mixture.
  • Find a good lipstick or lip color that works well with your complexion and coloring. Apply foundation or powder to your lips before applying your lipstick, that way it will it stay in place and last longer. And don't underestimate the value of plain lip gloss or lip shine. They can look terrific on a number of people.
  • Keep your eye makeup as simple as possible. Test your products out before the big day. Nothing can be worse than having your eye makeup running down your face.
  • This should go without saying, but I'll say it anyway; don't forget good personal hygiene. Brush your teeth and use a deodorant that works. It won't matter how pretty you look, if no one wants to get close to you.
  • Take good care of your skin. It's an investment that will pay off in years to come. Wash your face often and always remove your makeup before bed.
  • Wear your best smile. A pretty smile is a great asset and one that most Cheerleaders are known for.

As you can see, it doesn't have to be a chore to look your best. Just like in Cheerleading, if you stay organized, practice and plan ahead, you can be a winner every time.

The NHL Hurricanes Storm Squad was started in 1999 with the opening of the Entertainment and Sports arena. Although officially labeled a fan team their main job is to help motivate the the hockey fans at all the Hurricanes home games. They lead cheers and perform skits, as well as doing in-game promotions such as shirt slinging, contests, and handing out promotional items. The squad has become so popular and has grown over the years that they are now almost as well known as the players. As Brian Mehm, the Hurricanes Promotions and Fan Development Manager said "The fans love them and know them by name... it is wonderful to see how loved they are by everyone... women and men, kids and teenagers. We had 12 people interview last year and this year we have a waiting list over 80 strong!"

Although the look of the Storm Squad has transformed a bit through the years, their overall role has remained the same. Brian explains, "They used to wear very unflattering outfits and perform activities related to promotions, such as shirt slinging, etc... We decided to give them a bit more of an appealing and athletic look (both girls and guys!). We went to more fit pants and tops that the members of the team felt comfortable in, but were not trashy. The result was that these lovely people that we used as our fan team were now appreciated by our fans not only for their actions on the ice and in the stands, but are also seen as athletic and attractive." He also added, "I think that it is important for people to understand that what we are doing here works because of the environment that we are in... there are 3 of the nations top athletic programs for the NCAA within 20 minutes. People are used to the athletic cheerleader look so it was a natural fit for us. The important thing was to find something that was both comfortable and tasteful for the members of the squad, that would also be accepted by the fans. I have seen too many examples of lack of taste with these "type" of teams. It was very important for us not to portray that image with the wonderful family atmosphere that we have achieved here."

The squad consists of 16 men and women chosen for their athletic abilities and outgoing personalities. Candidates must be over 18 years old and committed to appearing at no less than 75% of the games. Tryouts are held in September of every year. See their site for more information.

So, what do you think? Are they Cheerleaders or not? - Take our poll.

Why Would You Want to be a ...
Oct 25th 2011, 10:08

Why would you want to be a Cheerleader?  Do you think the position comes with instant popularity?   Or maybe you are under the impression that your access to football players will ensure you have dates.  Do you think you'll look good in a short skirt and are considering it for that reason?  Well, don't be misled by the stereotypes.  Plain and simple - Cheerleading is hard work.

Cheerleading comes with many responsibilities and if you're not ready to make a commitment to it you shouldn't even waste your time trying out.   Let's take a look at just a few of the responsibilities that come with being a Cheerleader:

  • Time - As a Cheerleader you can plan on spending many hours practicing.  Add in the hours you'll need for fundraising, pep rallies, competitions and performances and it's easy to see this sport is very time consuming.
  • Financial - Uniforms, shoes, accessories and camps/clinics all cost money.  Some costs may be offset by fundraisers, but chances are you'll be asked to invest part of the costs involved in cheering.
  • Role Model - Cheerleaders are looked up to by their peers.  They are expected to maintain good grades and set a good example for the rest of the student body.   If you can't live up to these expectations or don't like the scrutiny that you'll be under because of your position then you should definitely reconsider your decision to try out.
  • Work - Cheerleading is as much mental as it is physical.  It will not only place many demands on your body,  but it will change your way of thinking too.  You will be a part of a group that will strive to think and act as one.   You will learn to think about the team first and base your decisions on what is best for everyone.  Your squad will become your second family.   Although you may disagree, there will be times you'll have to compromise.

It's not hard to see that Cheerleading is more than yelling on the sidelines and shaking your poms.  It's a commitment, a dedication, and an attitude.  It will change your life in many ways and anyone that has ever been a Cheerleader can attest to the fact that it's worth it.

OUTSIDE HITCHES- 16 PEOPLE, 4 FLYERS, 8 BASES, 4 BACK SPOTS
You want to set up thigh stand, hitch group, hitch group, thigh stand. The thigh stands need to be facing the hitch groups. Each group needs a back. The thigh stands can set up a count before the hitch groups or they can all go up at the same time. Now the hitches are easiest if you do straight up hitch but if you can't get that then just transfer over to hitch once you are up in your extension. The hitch flyers need to give their outside foot to the thigh stand flyer. If you have extra people you can use them as fronts for the hitches or you can put up a QP/awesome or something else in between the two hitches. To dismount either regular cradle the hitch flyers or inside twist down the hitch flyers.

PUMPS TO LIBS- AT LEAST 15 PEOPLE, 3 FLYERS, 6 BASES, 3, BACKS, 3 FRONTS
Set up at least 3 elevator groups in a line, you want to have a front for every group, so each group needs 5 people. Say you only have 3 groups, on the count the two outside groups are going to go straight up extension and the middle group is just going to go to elevator, hold for a count of one or two and then switch, extensions come down to elevator and elevator goes up to extension, hold for a count of one or two and then elevators go up to lib (that's why you need fronts), and extension transfers over to lib. Flyers don't connect or blade arms. If you have enough for more groups go for it the more the merrier! .

FLEX MOUNT- 20 PEOPLE, 4 FLYERS, 8 BASES, 4 BACKS, 4 FRONTS
To set this one up you need 4 elevator groups and 4 very flexible flyers. Looking at the stunt, furthest left and facing in you want a flyer that can do a right back loop/scorpion, then next a few steps right and a few steps forward facing forward you want a flyer that can do a left bow n arrow or if you don't have girls that can do bow n arrows then a left heal stretch, a few steps right facing forward you want a flyer that can do a right bow n arrow or heal stretch, a few steps right and a few steps back and facing in you want a flyer that can do a left back loop/scorpion. Now that means that the back loop groups are facing eachother a few steps off the outside shoulders of the bow n arrow groups. Everyone should go up to a QP/awesome first hold a few counts, then hit a lib with the leg that they will be doing their flexing with hold for a few seconds then hit either their back loop or their bow n arrow hold for a few seconds then back to lib then cradle.

TORCHES & HITCHES - 20 PEOPLE, 5 FLYERS, 10 BASES, 5 BACKS
In the very back row you want two elevator groups facing forward then a few steps in front of them you want and elevator group facing in, another elevator group facing forward, then another elevator group facing in. The flyers in the very back row are going to be doing front hitches placing their inside hitched foot on the shoulder of the front middle elevator flyer. The two outside front flyers will be doing torches placing their foot that is closest to the front in the hand of the middle elevator flyer. If you can't do straight up hitches and torches then transfer over after you get up into extension. To dismount the torches can fall back to cradle, the other three groups have to pencil down because they are to close to cradle.
