What it Means to be a Cheerlea
Sep 29th 2011, 10:02

The positions of Cheerleading captain and CO-captain are often the most coveted on a squad. And it's important that these positions not be filled by a person's popularity, but rather by their ability to fulfill the responsibilities and duties of being a Cheerleading captain or CO-captain. Although the duties of captain can vary from squad to squad there are some traits and skills that are normally looked at when selecting a Cheerleading captain. So, what are the responsibilities and duties of being a Cheerleading captain? And do you have the skills it takes to be your squad's captain or CO-captain? Let's see.

Skills and Traits of a Good Cheerleading Captain and CO-Captain

  • Good Communication Skills - You should be able to not only speak clearly, but also be a very good listener.
  • Responsibility and Maturity - You should be dependable, punctual, and emotionally mature.
  • Be a Good Role Model - Your behavior is a reflection on not only yourself but the whole squad. You should always set a good example in what you say and how you act.
  • Fair and Impartial - You should be able to separate your friendships from your responsibilities. Your decisions should not be based on favoritism and you should always do what's best for the whole squad and not any one individual.
  • Helpful and Friendly - You should always be willing to do a bit extra for others or to get tasks accomplished.
  • Be Approachable - The squad should feel like they can discuss situations and problems with you.
  • Be Able to Delegate Without Being Bossy - Remember it's not always what you say that's important but the way you say it. Be tactful and respectful of others feelings.

Responsibility and Duties of Cheerleading Captains and CO-Captains

  • Start Practices - See that all materials and supplies are ready to go.
  • Notify Squad Members - You should have a calling list and be sure everyone on the squad is notified of upcoming events.
  • Call Cheers - You might be asked to plan what cheers are used and call them at games and events.
  • Organize Sign Making - This duty is sometimes assigned to the squad captain.
  • Help Organize Fundraising Events - Work closely with the Coach/Advisor on setting up any fundraising events
  • Help with Publicity and Advertising - You should act as your squad's ambassador by greeting and making visiting squads feel welcome. Help with recruiting and any positive exposure for the squad.
  • Help Solve Conflicts - This is where your skill at being fair and impartial will come in handy.
  • Discuss Your Role and Duties with Your Coach - It should be made clear from the very beginning what exactly you'll be responsible for and what is expected of you. Each squad and coach is different, so it's best to have this spelled out clearly from the onset.
  • Be Able to Communicate with the Coach - You may sometimes be asked to act as a go between from the squad to the coach. You should realize this and not hesitate to do what is right for the whole squad.

How to Jump
Sep 28th 2011, 10:03

The Jump - Counts 5 and 6

On count 5, you will bend your knees while using all your strength to swing your arms down in front of you. Your arms should cross each other some where between your elbows and wrists when they reach your mid section or upper thighs. Your body should be a bit forward, but not too much. On count 6, you will propel or spring yourself into the air and hit the arm and leg position of the jump you are doing.

Learning Cheerleading
Sep 28th 2011, 10:03

I recently had the opportunity to review some instructional Cheerleading videos sent to me. Instructional videos are a great way to learn new techniques, improve your Cheerleading skills or to reaffirm that you're performing to perfection.

The two videos I watched were Foundation of Successful Cheerleading, Jumps and Jump Exercisesand Cheers and Chants, Volume 3. Both of which were made in cooperation with the American Cheerleading Federation and written by Mark Bagon, President of the AFC.

The videos were concise and easy to follow. The narration was informative and each technique was shown from different camera angles. I like the pause and rewind function of a VCR and if you can't watch something in person, I think an instructional video is the next best thing.

The Jumps and Jump Exercisesvideo covered everything from prep to landing of an actual jump. There were drills to improve your jumping skills and tips to make your jumps soar. The video instructed you on executing five jumps that included, Tuck Jumps, Spread Eagles, Double Hooks, Side Hurdles, and Toe Touches. It went over the Do's and don'ts of jumping and had an emphasis on learning the basics correctly. If you're looking to improve your jumping technique, this video would definitely be worth the investment.

The Cheers and Chants, Volume 3video covered 12 chants and 6 cheers. The were each demonstrated from a front and back angle, which made them easy to follow and learn. The cheers are not only vocalized but written on the screen. This video begins with a thorough overview of motion techniques including common errors and ends with motion technique drills. It covered the proper way to make a fist, as well as, the T-motion, high V, low V, half T, table top, low touchdown, and high touchdown motions. With four volumes in this Cheers and Chants series of videos, I feel any one of them would make a good addition to your instructional Cheerleading material.

So, if you can't get your Cheerleading squad to a camp or clinic, but want to work on your skills, try one of the many instructional videos that are available.

Do you know of some good Cheerleading instructional material? Send me an email and share it on the About Cheerleading site. Watch for more reviews coming soon.

Cheeleading Safety Quiz
Sep 28th 2011, 10:03

This is a sample of a safety test given by Coaches Margie Seitz and Carly Slagel. Margie is the coach for the York County School of Technology varsity football cheerleaders and assistant competition coach. She has coached cheerleading for 22 years. Carly is the coach for York County School of Technology freshman football squad, varsity basketball squad, and head competition coach. She has coached cheerleading for 8 years. They are a mother/daughter team that have been coaching together for 3 years. You can email Carly for more info.

Margie and Carly use this test for their squad. They require each member of their team to score a 90% or above on it before they are allowed to stunt.

Note: Please answer with what you believe to be the safest choices. When it says "illegal" or "legal" it does not necessarily mean according to any association or rule, it's just what Margie and Carly consider "illegal" or "legal" for their high school squad.

Cheerleading Safety
Sep 20th 2011, 10:02

As with any sport, safety should be of the utmost concern for all involved in cheerleading. Whether you're a cheerleader, coach or parent, your main objective should be to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

There are many references to safety studies that lead to insinuations that cheerleading is not a safe sport, but regardless of the statistics, one injury is too many. No one wants a broken bone, a day in the hospital, a visit to the ER or a catastrophic injury. Especially when a small amount of common sense can prevent any one of these outcomes.

Simply by knowing why the majority of injuries occur will help you better understand how to prevent them. Armed with these fact you can make certain your squad has an injury free season.

Why Cheerleading Injuries Occur

  • Lack of conditioning and not being physically prepared
  • Untrained coaches, instructors or advisors
  • Poor decision making by instructors or participants
  • Risk taking attitudes
  • Inadequate supervision
  • Inadequate equipment (example: improper shoes)
  • Non-cushioned surfaces
  • Poor nutrition
  • Attempting difficult stunts before being ready

What You Can do to Prevent Injuries

  • Adhere to all rules and regulations
  • Practice on mats or pads
  • Wear well fitting shoes with proper cushion and support
  • Have an emergency plan in place and practice it
  • Require proper spotting
  • Gradually progress to difficult stunts and skills
  • Become educated and certified in safety, first aid and CPR
  • Require and use the proper techniques
  • Learn how to identify eating disorders
  • Treat all injuries as soon as they happen
  • Increase flexibility
  • Strengthen lower back, abdoman and shoulders
  • Gradually increase intensity of practice

Know that cheerleading carries some unavoidable risks and no amount of prevention can stop every injury, but with the proper information and knowledge the severity and frequency of injuries can be greatly reduced. Be safe, stay safe.

Spotting Successfully in Cheerleading, from your About Cheerleading Guide
Sep 17th 2011, 10:02

 Join the Discussion
"I'm a spotter on my squad, and I always have been, for the 7 years I've been a cheerleader. It's because I've always been so tall. I feel that spotting is really important, but it's also really hard to do it right. More than likely, the spotter is the one that has to save a falling flyer."

Being a spotter (sometimes called third base or scoop) in Cheerleading is no easy task. The responsibility of preventing injury to the flyer rests on the spotter's shoulders or rather in their arms. A spotter should always be in contact with the performing surface and should be an alert, fast thinking, aggressive, and preferably taller person. They are also usually the person that calls everything in a stunt.

A spotter assists the flyer into the stunt but is not the primary support. They help steady or balance the stunt and most importantly, help to catch the flyer, if she falls, so as to prevent injury. Their role in stunting is huge and should never be taken lightly.

Skills, Abilities and Tips on Spotting

  • Attentive - A spotter has to pay attention to what is going on. They should not be easily distracted or lose their concentration.
  • Fast Thinking - A spotter must be able to react quickly to any situation.
  • Teaching - A spotter can help in teaching the flyer by building up their confidence and trust. If the flyer knows she will be caught, she can focus more on her flying technique.
  • Timing - As with all positions in stunting, the timing of the spotter has to be perfect.
  • Saving - Spotters have to know how to save a stunt and not be afraid to do so.
  • Fearless - A spotter can not have any fear of catching the flyer or of being hurt by doing so. If anyone is to hit the ground, it should be the spotter.
  • Keep Your Eyes on the Flyer - Unless a spotter has to check a grip, their eyes should be on the flyer at all times.
  • Maintain Contact with Flyer - Whenever possible the spotter should keep in contact with the flyer. This not only helps balance the stunt, but it will make the flyer feel more confident and secure.
  • Know How to Catch - If the flyer should happen to fall, the spotter should know how to catch her head and neck first. By catching the head and neck, the spotter can prevent the most serious of injuries. The spotter (and bases) should also catch the flyer at the highest point possible. This helps slow her descent.

As you can see, it takes a very special person to fill the position of spotter and the importance of this position should never be underestimated.

Visit the About Cheerleading forum and tell us what your position is and why you think it's important or just read what other Cheerleaders have to say about flying, basing and spotting.

Stop the Stereotyping of Cheer
Sep 17th 2011, 10:02

"She's dumb," "he's feminine," "she's ditzy," and "they're snobs" - If you've ever cheered and even if you haven't, chance are you've probably heard them all. And those are just a few of the typical comments made about Cheerleaders. Why can't an activity that is so full of hard work, determination and dedication get the respect it deserves? Why are all Cheerleaders lumped into a group with such unflattering traits? Will the stereotyping ever end?

Cheerleading is not just about cheering. Cheerleaders are athletes. They workout, they lift weights, they sweat, they get injured, they practice and they perform. So, why do they have to constantly defend their sport and themselves?

Why People Stereotype

Most people probably stereotype because they don't know the truth and it's easier to put everyone in their own little niche. It is common for people to judge other people, but what is dangerous is when it's done without fully understanding or knowing something or someone. What is even more dangerous is when it is done in a negative fashion.

Take for instance a school Cheerleading squad. The members spend a lot of time together, they practice after school many days a week, they attend games together and they might even go to competitions. They share their love of Cheerleading and their goals are similiar. The squad has become their second family, the members are their friends. It would be natural for them to want to hang out together at school, lunch and breaks. But if someone were to see them as a group talking, would they think they are snobs or unsocialable to others? Perhaps and this is where the misunderstandings stem from. Things can look different depending on where you're standing.

How to Stop the Stereotyping

Educate people. When you have an opportunity to explain what Cheerleading is all about, use it wisely. Don't get overly defensive. If your intelligence is attacked, state the fact that most Cheerleaders have to maintain a high gpa to even be on a squad. If the attack is about whether Cheerleading is a sport and whether you're an athlete, invite the person to a practice. Let them see firsthand what you do and how hard you work.

Of course, there will be some people who you'll never be able to change their way of thinking. But that's okay, as long as they respect your opinion and you respect them for theirs.

Then there's the media, who for many years have jumped on every opportunity to display Cheerleaders in a bad light for their own monetary gains. Well, the next time you encounter something like that, you should speak out. Write an editor, send an email to the TV station, defend your sport and yourself. But do so in a civilized, mature way.

Cheerleading has come a long way in recent years, but it still has a long way to go. People don't change their opinions over night. Remember you respresent your sport and other Cheerleaders in all you do. And any impression you leave will reflect on Cheerleading and Cheerleaders everywhere. Think before you act or react.
