Cheerleading: What's Hot Now: Not Making the Cheer Squad

Cheerleading: What's Hot Now
These articles that had the largest increase in popularity over the last week // via fulltextrssfeed.com
Not Making the Cheer Squad
Dec 30th 2011, 11:02

You've done everything right. You practiced, you built up your strength, stamina and flexibility and you've been eating healthy and getting plenty of rest. Your body is at its peak. Your motions are sharp, your jumps are high and your tumbling is terrific. So, why didn't you make the squad?

The question is not easy to answer, but consider the factors below and ask yourself if you lack any of these qualities.

  • Attitude - Coaches can put a lot of weight on attitude. They think that skill can be taught, but a bad attitude is forever.
  • Spirit - Demonstrate your spirit and your heart for cheerleading. Woo the judges with your enthusiasm. Make sure your cheers aren't just words, put your feelings behind them.
  • Personality - Let your personality shine through. Be outgoing and friendly.
  • Leadership - Did you show that you could take control of a situation? Were you the type of person others would want to follow? Initiate things and don't just follow along.
  • Team Work - Were you a team player? When you spoke of accomplishments, was it "us" or "I" that came to your mind first?
  • Helpfulness - Did you help others? Did you offer to assist someone that was struggling with a skill?
  • Willingness to Try New Things - Volunteer to try new things. Ask yourself if you are willing to do something you've never done before?
  • Versatility - The difference between a good cheerleader and a great cheerleader is that a great cheerleader is an all around person; she/he can do more than one thing on the squad. Did you focus on only one position? Did it come across like you could only do one thing like base, spot or fly? Or did you show you were versatile and could function in any position when needed?

It's not to say that if you possess the qualities above you will definitely make the cheerleading squad. But if two people have the same cheerleading skills and abilities, these qualities are what may or may not get you that coveted spot on the cheerleading team.

You'll also want to keep in mind the type of cheerleading squad it is. You should select your squad as carefully as they select you. The match should be a perfect fit.

  • Are they strictly a competitive squad? If so, watch a few performances and see what stunts, tumbling and dance moves the majority of the squad members have mastered. This will give you some insight into what skills you'll need to make the team. If they are highly competitive, the chances are great that they will put a lot of stress on these abilities and skills.
  • Are they a supportive squad? Do they cheer for other sports? This type of squad takes a combination of skill and personality. How well do you know the other sports? Do you know the scoring system, the time outs, and when it's offense or defense? Take some time to learn the basics of football, basketball or whatever sport you'll be cheering.
  • Does the squad do a lot of spirit activities? Like pep rallies, sign making, skits and so on. These activities take imagination and creativity. If you're good at speaking in front of crowds, that's an added plus for this type of squad.
  • What about fundraising? If the squad has to raise funds, then you can't be shy about approaching strangers and asking for money or donations.
  • How often do they practice? Can you handle a rigorous practice routine? Do you have the stamina, the means of transportation to and from practices and most importantly, the time to be fully committed?

There's no one secret to making a cheerleading squad. It takes a combination of things to be selected and when you're being judged, it could all come down to one person's opinion. You can stack the deck in your favor though. Stress your strengths and try to diminish your weaknesses. Show you're an all around type of person and you will stand out in a crowd. After all, that's exactly what a cheerleader is.

As in any sport, diet and nutrition are important to Cheerleaders. A proper diet can help build strong muscles, keep your mind alert, give you energy and enhance your performance. Simply said, "Food fuels your body and mind".

There is so much focus on the appearance of Cheerleaders, they sometimes become victims of fad diets, fast weight loss and improper nutrition. Don't give in and fall into these ruts. Cheerleading is a high energy sport that takes fast thinking, good coordination and strong muscles. It is far better to maintain a healthy and nutritious diet, get plenty of rest, drink lots of fluids and exercise, to keep your body in peak condition for optimal performance. You are what you eat; eat healthy and be healthy.

Without getting into too much physiology, your body needs carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are the body's main source of energy. Proteins are the basis for your muscles and fats/oils help with your nerves and hormones among other things. A proper diet should include all of these, but the key to maximum performance is the ratio you intake. An athlete should eat a balanced diet that is high in carbohydrates, low in fat, and adequate in protein.

Follow these simple guidelines of what to eat before, during and after you perform, compete, or tryout.

What to Eat and When

  • Before
    • Eat high carbohydrate foods like bread, pasta, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. Carbohydrates are digested quickly and provide glucose to the muscles. Stay away from dairy products and too much protein like greasy hamburgers, pizza, ice cream, and cheese. Avoid soda pop and candy bars. They can give you a quick burst of energy, but it will drop quickly, leaving you feeling spent.
    • Timing your meal from 1 to 4 hours before strenuous activity will help keep plenty of blood glucose available for your muscles.
    • It is also important to drink plenty of water to keep your muscles hydrated.
  • During
    • Drink plenty of water. Exertion and perspiration deplete your body of fluids and can lead to dehydration. It is recommended you drink at least a half of cup of water for every twenty minutes of exercise or strenuous activity.
    • If your activity is hard and continuous, over 90 minutes, drink a sports beverage or a drink with sugar added.
  • After
    • This is the time to eat protein to replenish what you lost during your physical activity, but don't overdo it. Remember protein can not only come from meats but is also present in dairy products and eggs.
    • Replace carbohydrates if your activity was long and exerting.
    • Replace any potassium or sodium that has been lost during competition or training by eating fruits, vegetables and salty foods.
    • Continue to replace fluids.

Knowing what foods your body needs for energy will payoff in your athletic accomplishments. Eat smart and you'll perform better.

Good Luck!

Cheerleading: What's Hot Now: A Cheerleaders Voice

A Cheerleaders Voice
Dec 28th 2011, 11:02

Whether you're trying out or shouting out to a crowd, a cheerleaders voice is an important part of Cheerleading. And although you might not give it a lot of thought since talking is almost second nature to us, the proper care and use of a cheerleaders voice is a must to cheer successfully. By following these tips on warming your voice up, breathing correctly and avoiding misuse/abuse of your voice, you can help keep it in top shape and ensure that it will always be there when you need it.

Warming Up - Warming Down - Cheerleaders Voice

Mark Baxter of www.voicelesson.com explains it this way, "Just as your limbs require stretching before you begin a routine, your voice needs some prep time as well. You'll get more projection power and last longer if you warm up your voice. Make simple low volume siren swoops while humming, trilling the lips (brrrrrrr), rolling the tongue (trrrrrrr), buzzing the tongue (zzzzzzz) and singing EE. The same routine is good for soothing the voice after cheering, too."

Cheerleaders Breathing Exercise - Diaphragm Breathing

You've all heard the advice "use your voice from your diaphragm". Well, this exercise will help you utilize your diaphragm in an efficient way and help to strengthen this muscle. Here's how to do it:

  • Lie flat on your back and bend your knees.
  • Place one hand on your abdomen and one hand on your chest.
  • Now, inhale through your nose, but while doing so, move your stomach out and keep your chest still.
  • As you exhale, purse your lips and make your stomach go in. Again your chest should remain still.

Do this exercise for about 5-10 minutes. When you feel like you've accomplished this correctly you can add some weight to your abdomen (like laying a phone book on it) or practice the exercise in an upright sitting position or standing.

Cheerleaders Voice Misuse and Abuse - Things to Avoid

  • Never cheer when your voice is hoarse.
  • Do not cheer if you have a cold, allergies or an infection and stay away from people that have them.
  • Do not tighten your neck muscles when cheering.
  • Avoid using a fake, tense smile while cheering.
  • Never eat chocolate or drink milk before you cheer. They will coat your throat and your voice won't sound as clear.
  • Try not to cough or clear your throat. Instead try swallowing or taking a drink of water.
  • If you think you're losing your voice, don't whisper, just talk softly.
  • Avoid using unusual pitches. Don't go too high or too low with your voice.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs.
  • Avoid yelling while you're running, during strenuous activity and if you're out of breath.

What You Should Do

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Wash your hands frequently to avoid germs.
  • Eat properly, exercise and get plenty of rest.
  • Warm up your voice and warm it down.
  • Cheer while you are exhaling air and not when you're inhaling. Be sure to inhale deeply so that your lungs are filled.
  • Pay attention to your voice so you can realize when you might have a problem.

Signs You Might Have a Voice Problem

  • Hoarseness.
  • Dry scratchy voice.
  • Soreness in the throat or neck.
  • Tiredness.
  • The feeling of a lump in your throat.

Cheering can put a lot of strain on your throat and your vocal cords, but what is a cheerleader without her voice? So, use some common sense and these preventative measures to be sure that cheerleading voice is always there whenever you open your mouth and shout it out.

Most Common Names for Cheer...
Dec 26th 2011, 11:02

What do you think are the most common first names for female Cheerleaders? Do you think they follow the pattern of the U.S. census? Or perhaps, if you believe the stereotypes about Cheerleaders, you're thinking "I know, I know...Bambi, Candi, Amber and Tiffany have to be on the list." Well they're not.

Recently we conducted an unofficial survey to find the answers and below you can see the results.

How We Did It
During the last month or so, we asked you to post in the About Cheerleading forum your name and the names of any Cheerleaders you knew. Your response was tremendous and we had over 600 names posted.

Then, after gathering the data and combining variations of spellings (Britany, Brittany, Megan, Meghan and so on), we separated the names into a list. This list became our unofficial results.

Surprisingly, only one name appears on the U.S. Census list and our list. And that name is Jennifer.

Also, some names were very close, these included Amanda, Nicole, Lauren, Megan, Kate and Kristin (6th through 10th place) all of which were separated by only one or two points. And Abby, Olivia and Valerie all tied for last place on our list.

What We Found
(Top Ten Female First Names for Cheerleaders)

  1. Ashley
  2. Brittany
  3. Jennifer
  4. Sarah
  5. Jessica
  6. Amanda and Nicole(Nikki)Tie
  7. Lauren
  8. Megan
  9. Kate(Katie)
  10. Kristin

How They Compare to U.S. Census

  1. Mary
  2. Patricia
  3. Linda
  4. Barbara
  5. Elizabeth
  6. Jennifer
  7. Maria
  8. Susan
  9. Margaret
  10. Dorothy

As you can see Cheerleaders names don't necessarily follow the population pattern. Does this mean if your name is on our list you'll be a Cheerleader? We don't think so, but chances are if you have a large squad, you'll find someone on it with one of these names.

The Correct Way to Cheer
