The Champion Within - An Inspirational Cheerleading Poem by Tami Romeis
Jan 31st 2012, 11:08

The Champion Within
A Poem of Inspiration By Tami Romeis.

The Champion Within

Champions are made when you believe in the possibility of the perfect team.
When you believe in the flyer even though she’s fallen before.
When you believe in the base even though she’s faltered before.
When you believe in the tumblers even though they’ve stumbled before.
When you believe in the back tucks even though they’ve crashed before.
When you believe in the routine even though it’s fallen short before.
When you believe in the girl beside you and yourself even though you’ve failed before.
Believing in each other and yourself reveals the Champion within.

Why Would You Want to be a ...
Jan 31st 2012, 11:08

Why would you want to be a Cheerleader?  Do you think the position comes with instant popularity?   Or maybe you are under the impression that your access to football players will ensure you have dates.  Do you think you'll look good in a short skirt and are considering it for that reason?  Well, don't be misled by the stereotypes.  Plain and simple - Cheerleading is hard work.

Cheerleading comes with many responsibilities and if you're not ready to make a commitment to it you shouldn't even waste your time trying out.   Let's take a look at just a few of the responsibilities that come with being a Cheerleader:

  • Time - As a Cheerleader you can plan on spending many hours practicing.  Add in the hours you'll need for fundraising, pep rallies, competitions and performances and it's easy to see this sport is very time consuming.
  • Financial - Uniforms, shoes, accessories and camps/clinics all cost money.  Some costs may be offset by fundraisers, but chances are you'll be asked to invest part of the costs involved in cheering.
  • Role Model - Cheerleaders are looked up to by their peers.  They are expected to maintain good grades and set a good example for the rest of the student body.   If you can't live up to these expectations or don't like the scrutiny that you'll be under because of your position then you should definitely reconsider your decision to try out.
  • Work - Cheerleading is as much mental as it is physical.  It will not only place many demands on your body,  but it will change your way of thinking too.  You will be a part of a group that will strive to think and act as one.   You will learn to think about the team first and base your decisions on what is best for everyone.  Your squad will become your second family.   Although you may disagree, there will be times you'll have to compromise.

It's not hard to see that Cheerleading is more than yelling on the sidelines and shaking your poms.  It's a commitment, a dedication, and an attitude.  It will change your life in many ways and anyone that has ever been a Cheerleader can attest to the fact that it's worth it.

Funny Cheerleading Stories
Jan 29th 2012, 11:08

As a cheerleader you're in front of crowds all the time, so chances are pretty good that eventually something funny and embarrassing will happen. Here's a collection of funny and embarrassing cheerleading moments and stories submitted by cheerleaders. Enjoy.

Submitted by: Megan Title: I Lost My Bra
I was cheering at a football game, a home one. We were doing the fight song, which we do every time we get a touchdown, so it's a big deal. Well, that afternoon, all my sports bras were dirty so I had to wear a regular bra. We were well into the LONG fight song and out of no where my bra came undone. With a long time left, I had to play it off and try to keep the bra from falling off completely. It was SO embarrassing.

Submitted by: PantherCaptian Title: Back to Back
Well I am the captain of my squad and also a flyer. This year was a big honor for me because we went Nationals for the first time. We had a great routine we did some basket tosses but at the end me and my co captain are suppose to do some tumbling. We did roundoffs front hand spring and a full out when we were about to finish with a back handspring back tuck we met in the middle of the stage and collided. We hit the ground on our butts and somehow ended up sitting with our backs together. The cheer ended there thankfully and we just put our arms up and smiled sitting there. I was so embarrassed but happy we took 2nd place in nationals.

Submitted by: keita Title: Pep Rally Disaster
It was our first pep rally and we had to move into our positions for the cheer. When our captain called the cheer I realized that I was in the wrong position. When I ran to get in my right spot I tripped and almost fell in front of the whole school.

Submitted by: lilkelsamo Title: Poo Poo
Cheerleading tryouts had began and we had learned the dance and every one was watching as each grade group went up and preformed. It was like a mini tryout thing. Well it was time for the juniors to go up and like everyone I run to the back. Little to my notice there was a big pile of dog crap in the grass and me of all people step in it, it was so embarrassing I could of cried. I just pretended like it wasn't me and kept dancing. Eew it was gross.

Submitted by: Amber Title: Where Am I? Dazed and Confused
It was my first year cheering for the varsity squad, though I have cheered before. We were at competition with a great dance and cheer. We were totally ready...until one of the flyers got really sick and wasn't allowed to participate! Which totally bummed us out! So our coach, totally nervous made a few changes right before we went out. She was talking really fast and I couldn't understand her, so when we went out to compete...I completely forgot what she said, I messed up the whole ending. But we had really fast thinking girls that pulled us through it and won us 2nd, no thanks to me! :(

Submitted by: Samantha Title: Tryouts Fall
Ok well it was the day of try-outs, I was all ready and not nervous..well I went in to do my rallying..and I was throwing a round off back hand spring back tuck..well after the tuck I over rotated and "tried" to recover from a back handspring...well my hands got turned in and I fell right on my face (gym floor lol). I got up and laughed sooo hard!

Submitted by: Cheerchick Title: Can't Spell
When I was in 8th grade I was on the squad for my school. Well our basketball team was in the tournaments so of course we had to cheer. The day before we had made a new cheer using signs that spelled out "eagles" which was our school's mascot. Well during half time we each grabbed our sign and went out to the middle of the floor. We were all so nervous about the cheer b/c it was the 1st time performing it, that we forgot how to spell eagles. We were running around for like 5 mins trying to figure it out until our coach finally told us to forget it and go sit down. Needless to say, we never did that cheer again.

As you can see, cheerleaders can have some very embarrassing moments, but they can also laugh at themselves. Share your funny and embarrassing stories with us. Link is below.

Say What? Cheerleading Vocabulary
Jan 28th 2012, 11:12

Say What?
When a Cheerleader says "Table top", she usually isn't talking about the furniture - Learn more about Cheerleading terms and jargon.

Cheerleaders seem to have their very own vocabulary. When you hear them say words like "banana", "pretzel", "liberty" and "table top", chances are, they're not discussing fruit, food, freedom, or furniture.

As the sport of Cheerleading has evolved technically, it's become necessary to add new words to describe motions, jumps, and stunts that were never performed before. These new words or terms form what is called Cheerleading jargon.

Some terms may vary according the region of the country the Cheerleader is in, and quite frequently, Cheerleaders will use multiple terms to describe something similar.

These differences can be nothing more than a variation of the spelling, like in Herkie/Hurkie, Flyer/Flier, or Cupie/Kewpie. In other instances, totally different words will have the same meaning, such as; mounting/stunting, double hook/abstract, or flicking/sweeping.

Words like toe touch, hook, hurdler, and pike describe Cheerleading jumps. Liberty, scorpion, elevator, and extension are representative of stunts and T, V, touchdown, L and daggers all depict Cheerleading motions.

So, the next time you hear someone brush off Cheerleading as something frivolous, remind them that the sport has advanced enough to have it's own vocabulary.

Note: I'd like to add photos to some of the Cheerleading terms. If you have a photo of a jump, motion, or stunt we can use on the site, send me an email. Thanks!

Through My Eyes
An Inspirational Poem Submitted by Randi.

Through My Eyes

As we walk through the door, our hair up in curls,
We watch some of the girls practice their flips and twirls.

It's our turn to practice, we run through everything once or twice;
All stunts are solid, the routine looks nice.

Our team is called, it's time to go on,
Our minds go blank, the routine is gone.

The crowd goes wild as we spirit out,
Everyone is nervous without a doubt.

The music starts, the routine comes back,
This is the real thing, no time to slack.

Formation runs and motion drills, we've all come to hate,
Really paid off, 'cause we're looking great.

We've practiced for hours to look good for three minutes,
We give it our all right up to the finish.

First place or last, we know we've done our best,
Now it's time to cheer for the rest.

Choosing Cheerleaders
Jan 27th 2012, 11:08

Recently the school board members in Corpus Christi, Texas became concerned about the racial and ethnic makeup of their school's Cheerleading squads. Of utmost interest to them was the Cheerleading selection process and whether it was fair to all students.

Before 1999 the Cheerleaders in CCISD were voted on by the student body. Then amid rumors of ballot stuffing, the school board moved to a panel of independent judges provided from either the Universal Cheerleading Association or the National Cheerleading Association.

Like at most schools, the cheerleaders are now judged on their cheers, jumps, presentation, voice, and spirit. It is no longer a popularity contest, it has definitely become a competition of skill and ability.

Over the years, as Cheerleading has grown into a competitive sport, it has also become more of an economic issue. Now a days, the majority of Cheerleaders start at an early age with lessons in gymnastics/tumbling, dance and Cheerleading. These lessons can end up costing thousands of dollars and that's not including the uniforms and other equipment they may have to purchase. Do these factors somehow rule out students in a lower income bracket?

Is there a way to select Cheerleaders that would be fair to everyone? Should schools be required to provide classes or the basics of Cheerleading at an early age? How does your school select its Cheerleaders and do you think it's fair?

Sound Off > Discuss it Here > Page 1, 2,

Cheerleaders - What it Takes
Jan 27th 2012, 11:08

Cheerleading Megaphone

Cheerleaders - What it Takes

If you're like most people, the word cheerleader conjures up visions of beautiful, young women in skimpy, sexy outfits. You may also imagine a cheerleader is not too bright and more concerned about what color lipstick to wear than world events. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Cheerleading takes an extreme amount of physical work as well as practice. Most cheerleaders practice an average of 8 hours a week. They must be as graceful as dancers, as poised as models, and as athletic as any gymnasts. Cheerleaders also have to be in top physical condition. The San Francisco 49er's Gold Rushmembers are encouraged to be "on a consistent cardiovascular & body conditioning workout program". In addition, they are advised to take a variety of dance classes including jazz, hip hop, and ballet.

As for intelligence, high school and college cheerleaders are usually required to have at least a 2.0 GPA to try out. A lot of schools will disqualify or remove a cheerleader that falls below an 1.5 average in any semester. This year the Denver Bronco's Cheerleaders boast of having 11 bachelor's degree-holders, two master's degree-holders, one graduate student, three teachers, the 1999 Miss Colorado USA, 1999 Miss Teen Colorado USA, 1998 Miss Teen Colorado USA and 13 full-time students on their team. Obviously, these women are certainly not lacking in intelligence.

Just like basketball, football, and baseball Cheerleading is a sport. So, the next time you look at a cheerleader on the field or court, remember she/he has put in many hours of dedication and there is more there than good looks, a pretty smile, and an outgoing personality.

Motion Magic

What makes a good Cheerleader into a great Cheerleader? Why do some people make it at tryouts and others don't? When you're watching that awesome squad on TV, what makes them stand out and look like a picture of perfection? Well, mostly these questions can be answered with "they know the basics." Sure, a terrific jump or stunt might wow a crowd, but when you're careless or lazy in your fundamental Cheerleading skills like motions, you're sure to lose points on any judging sheet.

Motions are one of the basic foundations of Cheerleading and a essential skill all Cheerleaders should master and more importantly keep mastered. So, whether you're a beginning Cheerleader just learning or an experienced one whose picked up some sloppy habits, get back to the basics, follow these tips and put the magic in your motions.

Tips on Motions:

  • Sharp 'n Snappy - We've probably all heard this before when referring to motions, but what does it truly mean. It means your arms should be stiff and your muscles tight. Your transitions should be smooth, snappy and quick. You should punch your motions out with a lot of strength.
  • Never bend your wrists - Your wrists should never be bent, cocked or out of alignment with your arms.
  • Elbows - If you're in an extended motion, your elbows should be locked.
  • Arm placement - Your arms should always be slightly in front of you and level. Know exactly where the spot is to hit a motion and don't settle for anything else than that spot. Again, keep your arms stiff and muscles tight. Don't let your arms bounce or jiggle.
  • Shoulders - Your shoulders should be relaxed and not raised up like in a shrug.
  • Fists - Know in what direction your fist should be facing (Examples: In a High V your thumbs should be facing towards the crowd. In a Touchdown your thumbs should be facing away from the crowd). Always keep your thumb outside your fist. If ever in doubt, ask your coach.
  • Transition -Take the shortest distance to the next motion and wait until the last second to make it. Move quickly and precisely.
  • Synchronize your motions - Your motions should correspond with the syllables of the words in your cheer/chant or the count of your dance routines and stunts.
  • The clap or clasp motion - This simple motion is often overlooked. Your hands should be under your chin, your elbows in tightly and your fingers close together. It should look clean and neat.
  • Keep.

Exercises to Improve Your Motions:

  • Arm Strengthening - Do arm strengthening exercises like push ups and weight lifting. They offer some great ways to improve the strength in your arms and shoulders. Good motions are made with strong arms.
  • Hit your motions quickly - Then hold it for about 30 seconds as tight as you can. One tip in the forum also mentions tightening your butt muscles when you do this. As that will tighten your other muscles.
  • Work in front of a mirror or video yourself - Stand in front of a mirror and watch as you hit your motions. Look for arm position, fist position and any extra unnecessary movements. Then close your eyes and hit the motion again. Open your eyes and look in the mirror to see how you did.
  • Even when practicing other things, be sure you're completing your motions. Don't get lazy and halfway do them. Always complete each motion to the end.
  • Practice with your squad - Coordinate your motions and make sure you're doing them in unison.
  • Most motions have an opposite or reverse corresponding motion. Be sure to practice both.
  • Use your imagination, you can combine motions. Try different and unique sequences. Be creative.
