Cheerleaders Are Super Athl...
Jul 31st 2011, 10:02

A recent study led by researcher, Hermann Engels of Wayne State University, concluded that competitive Cheerleaders are in the same league physically as Olympic soccer and gymnastic contenders.

The study, which was one of the first of its kind, measured the fitness and physiology of 33 female high school Cheerleaders. The group of Cheerleaders consisted of a mix of competitive Cheerleaders and sideline Cheerleaders (Cheerleaders that cheer for a sports team at school). The researchers then put the Cheerleaders through some rigorous days of testing which included workouts on treadmills, stationary cycles and bend-and-reach tests. These tests measured the cheerleaders workout capacity, flexibility and lean body mass.

The results were not totally surprising to anyone familiar with Cheerleading. The competitive cheerleaders ranked very high in their fitness and strength. As a matter of fact, they ranked as well as any top level athlete and showed "superior athletic fitness."

On the other hand the sideline Cheerleaders had very little in common with their counterparts. The non competitive Cheerleaders had less interest in training and were even sometimes late in showing up for their lab times. The study was started with 20 competitive cheerleaders and 20 non competitive, but ended with full results on only 13 of the non competitive Cheerleaders. And these results showed that the non competitive Cheerleaders' fitness was not very different from that of an average untrained adolescent girl.

What both groups did have in common though were their eating habits. The study concluded that all of these Cheerleaders exhibited poor eating habits. They drank too many soft drinks and ate too many sweets. Their diets lacked sufficient quantities of Vitamin E and other key nutrients, which might indicate that coaching and training of Cheerleaders should incorporate nutritional counseling.

Hopefully more studies like this will be conducted on Cheerleaders and help shed the stereotype that Cheerleading endures. Cheerleading is a strenuous athletic activity and Cheerleaders are athletes.

Cheerleading: What's Hot Now: Motion Magic

Motion Magic
Jul 29th 2011, 10:02

What makes a good Cheerleader into a great Cheerleader? Why do some people make it at tryouts and others don't? When you're watching that awesome squad on TV, what makes them stand out and look like a picture of perfection? Well, mostly these questions can be answered with "they know the basics." Sure, a terrific jump or stunt might wow a crowd, but when you're careless or lazy in your fundamental Cheerleading skills like motions, you're sure to lose points on any judging sheet.

Motions are one of the basic foundations of Cheerleading and a essential skill all Cheerleaders should master and more importantly keep mastered. So, whether you're a beginning Cheerleader just learning or an experienced one whose picked up some sloppy habits, get back to the basics, follow these tips and put the magic in your motions.

Tips on Motions:

  • Sharp 'n Snappy - We've probably all heard this before when referring to motions, but what does it truly mean. It means your arms should be stiff and your muscles tight. Your transitions should be smooth, snappy and quick. You should punch your motions out with a lot of strength.
  • Never bend your wrists - Your wrists should never be bent, cocked or out of alignment with your arms.
  • Elbows - If you're in an extended motion, your elbows should be locked.
  • Arm placement - Your arms should always be slightly in front of you and level. Know exactly where the spot is to hit a motion and don't settle for anything else than that spot. Again, keep your arms stiff and muscles tight. Don't let your arms bounce or jiggle.
  • Shoulders - Your shoulders should be relaxed and not raised up like in a shrug.
  • Fists - Know in what direction your fist should be facing (Examples: In a High V your thumbs should be facing towards the crowd. In a Touchdown your thumbs should be facing away from the crowd). Always keep your thumb outside your fist. If ever in doubt, ask your coach.
  • Transition -Take the shortest distance to the next motion and wait until the last second to make it. Move quickly and precisely.
  • Synchronize your motions - Your motions should correspond with the syllables of the words in your cheer/chant or the count of your dance routines and stunts.
  • The clap or clasp motion - This simple motion is often overlooked. Your hands should be under your chin, your elbows in tightly and your fingers close together. It should look clean and neat.
  • Keep.

Exercises to Improve Your Motions:

  • Arm Strengthening - Do arm strengthening exercises like push ups and weight lifting. They offer some great ways to improve the strength in your arms and shoulders. Good motions are made with strong arms.
  • Hit your motions quickly - Then hold it for about 30 seconds as tight as you can. One tip in the forum also mentions tightening your butt muscles when you do this. As that will tighten your other muscles.
  • Work in front of a mirror or video yourself - Stand in front of a mirror and watch as you hit your motions. Look for arm position, fist position and any extra unnecessary movements. Then close your eyes and hit the motion again. Open your eyes and look in the mirror to see how you did.
  • Even when practicing other things, be sure you're completing your motions. Don't get lazy and halfway do them. Always complete each motion to the end.
  • Practice with your squad - Coordinate your motions and make sure you're doing them in unison.
  • Most motions have an opposite or reverse corresponding motion. Be sure to practice both.
  • Use your imagination, you can combine motions. Try different and unique sequences. Be creative.

How to be Great at Cheering
Jul 29th 2011, 10:02

Have you ever wondered what sets a great cheerleader apart from the rest of the squad? What makes her or him so special? And more importantly, how can you raise the level of your cheering from good to great.

Sure, the best cheerleaders are dedicated and very determined, but aren't you that way too? So, let's look at some things and then you can analyze the differences to see if or where you're lacking on what it takes to be a great cheerleader.

  • Are you willing to try new things? Not just for yourself but for the overall benefit of the squad?
  • Do you help your team mates? If you see a squad member struggling with a skill will you stop to offer constructive advice and help?
  • Do you work on your cheerleading skills every day? Do you realize you can always improve something? And that Cheerleading is made up of a lot different aspects, i.e. voice, motions, jumps, dance, stunts and gymnastics, that all need work.
  • Are you aware that your behavior and attitude are a big part of being a cheerleader? Do you work on these areas?
  • Are you involved in the community? Do you volunteer to help younger people?
  • Have you reached the point that you know you're not just a cheerleader at practice, a game or a performance? You're a cheerleader all the time, regardless of where you are or what you're doing.
  • Can you follow directions and take constructive criticism?

Some of the best cheerleaders have to work the hardest on their skills, but they have what it takes to be great on the inside. They have a cheerleading heart and attitude. A squad can only be as good as its weakest member, so it benefits everyone to raise the level of cheerleading throughout the whole team and this what being a team player is all about.

Cheerleading Stunts - JV Squads

Special Thanks to *Kaitlin for sharing these stunts!

Note: Please follow all safty guidelines while practicing or performing stunts. You should always have a knowledgeable coach or adult present. Be sure to check your school, association, or organization for what's legal and what isn't.

| Small to Med Varsity | Large Varsity |

Printable Version

Here are some fairly easy mounts for the Freshman and JV levels. Some of them use up to 10 people, others only use 3 or 4. Good Luck!

INSIDE HITCHES - 10 PEOPLE 3 FLYERS, 5 BASES, 2 BACK SPOTS
Set up: elevator, shoulder sit, elevator.
Have the two flyers in the elevators give their inside foot to the shoulder sit flyer. Easy as that.

OUT SIDE OR INSIDE LIBS - 10 PEOPLE, 3 FLYERS, 5 BASES, 2 BACK SPOTS
Set up: elevator, shoulder sit, elevator.
Once flyers are in elevator and have arms bladed with shoulder sit flyer, just have them pull either inside foot to lib or outside foot to lib. Easy also.

INSIDE HEEL STRETCH OR BABY NC STATE - 10 PEOPLE, 3 FLYERS, 5 BASES, 2 BACK SPOTS Set up:elevator, shoulder sit, elevator
Once flyers are in elevator have them hit inside heal stretch, shoulder sit flyer holds elevator flyers heal stretch. Or Once flyers are in elevators have them lock arms with shoulder sit flyer and lift inside leg to hip level and rest on shoulder sit flyers waist.

TOTEMPOLE - 10 PEOPLE, 3 FLYERS, 5 BASES, 2 BACK SPOTS
Set up: Back row extension, a few steps in front elevator, a few steps in front shoulder sit
Once everyone is up flyers lean forward to rest hands on flyer in front of them's shoulders. Very easy and cute.

SPLIT MOUNTS- 3 0R 4 PEOPLE, 1 FLYER, 2 BASES, BACK SPOT OPTIONAL
Set up: base, flyer, base, if you are using a back spot then she goes behind the flyer
Everyone starts facing forward. The based on the left is holding flyers left hand with her left hand and her right hand is under flyers left arm pit. The base on the right is holding the flyers right hand with her right hand and her left hand is under flyers right arm pit. Back spot is holding around flyers waist. If flyer is doing a right split then bases want to turn to the right as the flyer jumps and splits, if flyer is doing left split then they will turn to the left. The flyer just wants to jump and and do a split in the air, her bases need to pull her arms out and help her jump with hand that is under pit then move that hand to help guide her leg onto their shoulder, back spot just needs to help her jump up high enough to get her legs onto her bases shoulders. Don't let go of outside hands. To dismount bases just bend knees and pop her off the way she came on. Pretty easy too.

STRADDLE MOUNT - 4 PEOPLE, 1 FLYER, 2 BASES, 1 BACK SPOT
Set up: base, flyer, base, back spot is behind the flyer
Flyer needs to start with one leg lifted in front of her to hip level, the base on that side needs to be in a squatted position holding flyers leg, one hand between the ankle and knee other hand between the crotch and knee. Second base needs to be squatting as well and holding other leg the same way but other leg is still on the ground. Back spot needs to have one hand on butt cheek of leg that is lifted and other hand on back of thigh of leg that is on the ground. Flyer has hands on shoulders or heads of bases. On count lift flyer up to bases chest level first in almost pike then spread legs, back spot needs to help lift and then transfer both hands to butt. You can extend this if you want, every one just has to press it up to extension level and flyer just needs to stay tight, flyer also should end with arms in high V.

ARABESQUE - 8 PEOPLE, 2 FLYERS, 4 BASES, 2 BACK SPOTS
Set up:elevator, elevator Elevators should be facing eachother.
Once flyers are up in elevators the should put arms out in front of them so they are touching and then hit the arabesque that is open to the crowd (the leg that is up is the leg that is closest to the crowd)

OUTSIDE HITCHES - 8 PEOPLE, 2 FLYERS, 4 BASES, 2 BACK SPOTS
Set up: elevator, elevator Elevators are facing front. Set up elevators close to one another.
Once flyers are in elevators outside base takes a step out so that they are facing front, while they are stepping out they need to extend the foot they have to extension level. Easy? Yes!

TORCH- 10 PEOPLE, 3 FLYERS, 8 BASES, 2 BACK SPOTS
Set up: elevator, shoulder sit, elevator Shoulder sit is facing front, elevators are facing shoulder sit.
Once flyers are in elevators they need to give their foot that is closest to the front to the shoulder sit flyer and then turn their torsos to the front and hit high Vs.

SCORPION- 10 PEOPLE, 3 FLYERS, 2 TRADITIONAL BASES, 1 TRADITIONAL BACK, 4 BASE EXTRAS
Set up: back row base extra, base extra, front row flyer in front of base extra from back row, base extra, elevator group, base extra, flyer in front of base extra from back row
The middle is an elevator, once they are up the two side flyers need to have their hands on the shoulders of the elevator bases and their leg that is closest to the back lifted behind them. The base extras that are behind them need to be squatting and have one hand between the flyers ankle and knee and the other hand between the flyers crotch and knee. The base extras that are between the elevator and the flyer need to be squatting and be facing the flyer and holding the flyers waist. On the count outside flyers want to jump and base extras want to stand and lift their flyer. Flyers need to drive themselves up and over the shoulders of the elevator bases, it's very important for flyers to keep arms locked out. Outside flyers want to give front foot to elevator flyer, so that means outside flyers will have their leg that is closest to the front bent up behind them with the elevator flyer holding that foot up for them. Once you get good at doing it middle and then outside you can do it all at once. Fairly easy and looks neat for the crowd.

PIVOTS- 7 OR MORE PEOPLE, 1 FLYER, 2 BACK SPOTS, THE REST BASES
Set up: back row is just a back spot behind the flyer, the second row is base, flyer, base, base, base, the front row is just a back spot between the second and third bases.
Ok this one's a little bit tricky. All the bases except the very first one need to be facing the very first one but they need to be spaced out. You want to set up a regular elevator once she is up there she needs to transfer all of her weight to the base that has her back to the rest of the bases. Then that base wants to step back with one foot and pivot around to face the base that is behind her, flyer just needs to stay tight and the back need to follow the flyer, third base needs to step in and take foot that is not being held. The base should pivot so the flyer ends up facing her original back, the second back needs to step up and take over as back. Once you are stable flyer needs to transfer weight again to the base that just took her foot, this base needs to step back with the opposite foot as the first base did and pivot around to face the base that was behind her, second back needs to follow flyer, next base needs to step in and take flyers free foot. Flyer should end up facing the way she started and her original back should be backing her. You can do this as many times as you want, it looks neat going down a basket ball court and then also both sides of the gym get to see the flyers smiling face.

Practice Perfectly from your About Cheerleading Guide

Practice Perfectly
A perfect practice is the first step to avoiding injuries and performing perfectly.

As the saying goes "Practice makes Perfect" so it stands to reason that a perfect practice is the first step to a perfect performance. From planning your practices to safety measures, your practice sessions are the basis for how you're perform on the field or court. Perfect practices are as easy as 1, 2, 3, 4...

1. Scheduling

  • Be sure to schedule your squads practices regularly.
  • Make sure all members are informed of when and where. Don't assume everyone knows.
  • Keeping practices to a specific day, time, and place is very helpful.
  • Make attendance mandatory. Cheerleading is a team sport, and you need to practice as a team as well as individually.

2. Warm Up

  • You should warm up for at least 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Jogging or walking are good ways to warm up.
  • By warming up you improve your blood flow and increase the temperature of your muscles.
  • A proper warm up, will decrease your chances of injury.

3. Stretching

  • Perform some "active" stretches such as squats, lunges, side lunges, crunches, and hip rotations.
  • Do some limbering up. Raise your knees to your chest. Roll your shoulders and neck. Bend over and touch your toes.
  • Relax while you're stretching. Exhale as you go into a stretch, and don't hold your breathe.
  • Stretching prevents injury, increases your range of motion and can reduce muscle soreness.
  • Do not use quick or jerky motions while stretching.
  • Use a partner to stretch.
  • Use slow "static" stretches after you work out to warm down. Your muscles will be warm and need to cool down gradually. This will also return your muscles to normal relaxed length.

4. Safety

  • Be sure to have an adult/coach/advisor present at all practices.
  • Use spotters. Everyone should know the responsibilities of being a spotter.
  • Use mats on hard surfaces.
  • Pay attention to what you're doing. Concentrate. Stay Alert.
  • Wear proper attire to practice.
  • Talk with your partner or team members about each stage of a stunt.
  • Drink plenty of fluids during a practice such as water or sports beverages. Do not drink caffeine, colas, or alcohol.
  • Have fun.

Practices are important to your Cheerleading squad, they are a time when you bond with your teammates and build trust and respect for each other.

Spotting Successfully in Cheerleading, from your About Cheerleading Guide

"I'm a spotter on my squad, and I always have been, for the 7 years I've been a cheerleader. It's because I've always been so tall. I feel that spotting is really important, but it's also really hard to do it right. More than likely, the spotter is the one that has to save a falling flyer."

Being a spotter (sometimes called third base or scoop) in Cheerleading is no easy task. The responsibility of preventing injury to the flyer rests on the spotter's shoulders or rather in their arms. A spotter should always be in contact with the performing surface and should be an alert, fast thinking, aggressive, and preferably taller person. They are also usually the person that calls everything in a stunt.

A spotter assists the flyer into the stunt but is not the primary support. They help steady or balance the stunt and most importantly, help to catch the flyer, if she falls, so as to prevent injury. Their role in stunting is huge and should never be taken lightly.

Skills, Abilities and Tips on Spotting

  • Attentive - A spotter has to pay attention to what is going on. They should not be easily distracted or lose their concentration.
  • Fast Thinking - A spotter must be able to react quickly to any situation.
  • Teaching - A spotter can help in teaching the flyer by building up their confidence and trust. If the flyer knows she will be caught, she can focus more on her flying technique.
  • Timing - As with all positions in stunting, the timing of the spotter has to be perfect.
  • Saving - Spotters have to know how to save a stunt and not be afraid to do so.
  • Fearless - A spotter can not have any fear of catching the flyer or of being hurt by doing so. If anyone is to hit the ground, it should be the spotter.
  • Keep Your Eyes on the Flyer - Unless a spotter has to check a grip, their eyes should be on the flyer at all times.
  • Maintain Contact with Flyer - Whenever possible the spotter should keep in contact with the flyer. This not only helps balance the stunt, but it will make the flyer feel more confident and secure.
  • Know How to Catch - If the flyer should happen to fall, the spotter should know how to catch her head and neck first. By catching the head and neck, the spotter can prevent the most serious of injuries. The spotter (and bases) should also catch the flyer at the highest point possible. This helps slow her descent.

As you can see, it takes a very special person to fill the position of spotter and the importance of this position should never be underestimated.

Visit the About Cheerleading forum and tell us what your position is and why you think it's important or just read what other Cheerleaders have to say about flying, basing and spotting.

For other team foul shoots:
Hit the rim and spin
But don't go in!
*on the word "spin" make a spinning motion with your right pointer finger and on "don't go in" clap down so it kind of looks like you're saying don't with your hands, no transition*.

For foul shots:
Basket, basket, do it again,
You're on that line,
one more time.
So put it on in!

The Basics of Cheerleading
Jul 27th 2011, 10:02

Not all cheerleaders are created equally and unless you're involved in cheerleading you may not understand the different sectors of cheerleading and the different types of cheerleaders. This article will attempt to explain cheerleading and cheerleaders to an outsider or beginner. When you hear the word cheerleader, you probably conjure up an image of a young girl hollering and jumping on the sidelines at a football game, but this is only one type of cheerleader. Basically, cheerleading is made up of three sectors or types that consist of all stars, scholastic and recreational cheerleaders. Here is a brief explanation of each:

All Stars Cheerleaders - All star cheerleaders are normally associated with a gym that teaches tumbling, gymnastics and cheerleading. Their main objective is to compete and they are dedicated to practicing and performing. They do not cheer for another sport such as football or basketball. Thus, their cheers are a bit different, they don't use offense and defense cheers and use instead what is called competition cheers. Their skill level is usually very high as they mainly focus on competitions. In an all star gym you can find many different types of coaches such as a tumbling coach, stunting coach and a choreographer. As a whole, all star cheerleaders are skilled in many things, including but not limited to, tumbling, dance, gymnastics, and stunting. To make it on an all star squad you will have to go through a rigorous tryout process and they usually pull their cheerleaders from their group of gym students. It is thought that all star cheerleading is the fastest growing sector of cheerleading. Most all star cheerleaders are governed by the United States All Star Federation, USASF, but not all. All star cheerleading can be a very expensive activity considering parents have to pay for uniforms, travel, lessons and all other expenses related to competitions.

Scholastic Cheerleaders - These are the cheerleaders that the majority of people are familiar with and what comes to mind when you hear the word "cheerleader." They are associated with a school and their main focus is cheering for other sports and raising school spirit. Some scholastic cheerleaders compete, but not all of them. Their tryouts are normally held in the spring for the next school year. The tryout process can be held over a number of days or it can be that everyone that tries out makes it. The decision is left up to the coach and what she/he is looking for in cheerleaders. The tryout process can be either judged or voted on by the student body. This is also where there can be varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders depending on grade and/or skill level. Scholastic cheerleaders can range from novice to advanced levels of ability and sometimes popularity can even play a part in the selection process. Because scholastic cheerleaders represent their school their personality, leadership ability, grades and conduct are normally factored in when deciding who makes the squad. Scholastic cheerleaders normally cheer for football, basketball and sometimes other school sports. The coaches for a scholastic cheerleading program are pulled from teachers and they can have an actual coach or an advisor.

Recreation Cheerleaders - The recreation type of cheerleader is associated with a community's recreation department, church, or the YWCA, which in turn, can be associated with a national recreational league such as Pop Warner or the American Youth Football and Cheerleading League. A lot of areas of the country have state recreational associations or regional associations too. This type of cheerleader normally makes the squad if they sign up, so no official tryouts are held. The cost to be a recreational cheerleader is minimal. Rec cheerleaders usually cheer for the other sports in the league and they can compete in cheer competitions if they so choose. Coaches in a rec program are normally pulled from the parents or recreational program and it's usually a voluntary position. Because rec cheerleaders are very novice to begin with and are taught the fundamentals of cheerleading, they make an excellent source or feeder group for scholastic and all star programs.

Pro Cheerleaders - In the world of cheerleading, pro cheerleaders are not considered "real" cheerleaders. They are thought of as entertainers and dancers more than as cheerleaders. It's a grueling process to make a pro cheerleading squad and the number of applicants is high compared to the number that makes it on a team. They are paid very little for their performances, but have a number of opportunities to travel and do things such as appearances and calendars. Most pro cheerleaders have a full time job to offset their pro cheerleading careers and a lot of them use their experience as a pro cheerleader to further a career in the entertainment field. Exceptional looks, personalities, communication skills and dance ability all play a part in the selection process for pro cheerleaders.
