From choosing a cheerleading competition to a checklist of what to bring, this article is your one-stop resource before you enter and attend a cheerleading competition.

Finding and Choosing a Cheerleading Competition

It's important to consider a lot of things before you enter a cheerleading competition. Usually the decision is made by the coach, but sometimes the cheerleaders and parents have some input. Distance, transportation, dates, costs and the length of the competition are all factors you should consider before choosing a competition. Also, the competition host will play a big part in making up your mind. Is their judging fair? What's the venue like? Do they offer divisions that meet your squad's needs?

Getting All the Paperwork and Fees In On Time

It may seem like a very small thing and something you'd never do, but you'd be surprised by how fast dates can creep up on you. If you miss a deadline or can't pay the entry fees, you jeopardize your chance at entering. Know all the deadlines and make sure you get all the forms in on time.

Make a Checklist for the Squad and for Individual Members

You should develop a checklist for the whole squad including things like your first aid kit, music, props, medical forms and so on. Check everything off as you load it and get ready to leave. Each cheerleader should have her own checklist including things like shoes, makeup, uniform, poms and such. Again, they should check things off as they pack and get ready to leave.

Plan for Emergencies and Injuries

Although no one wants to think about it, accidents do happen. And that is why it's of the upmost importance that the squad is prepared and knows what to do in case of an emergency or injury. Once you develop an emergency plan, make sure you practice it.

Make Your Travel Plans

Figure out how you will get there and be very specific on any meeting places and times. Set up any carpooling in advance and make sure everyone is notified. If it's an overnight event, be sure to book your hotel rooms early. Consider chaperones and schedule more than you'll actual need. Set rules on curfews before you leave and make sure that the cheerleaders and parents are aware of them. Make a list of phone numbers including home, work and cell. These are just a few things cheerleaders, coaches and parents need to think about and know.

When You Get There

Look over the facility and make sure you know where everything is located. Check the schedule. Stay calm and focused. Ask questions if you have any. Jot down the things you think might be important to you or your squad. Have fun and enjoy the opportunity to meet new people and see new places.
